The modest décor was the reason I fell for this beach front home in St. Barts, owned by Parisian interior and furniture designer Christian Liaigre and his family. St. Barts is short for Saint Barthélemy, the French island in the Caribbean. Liaigre has been involved with projects on the island for many years, for example, the Le Sereno hotel and vacation homes for a few wealthy clients. But when he decided to build his own house, 'his goal was to re-create the simplicity that drew him to the island in the first place.' In an article in Elle Decor he is quoted saying: 'I wanted a house that was basic and surrounded by nature … Essentially, what I set out to build was a fisherman's hut.'
It was Liaigre himself who designed all the furniture for his vacation home, even the knitted sea-grass rugs, and mixed them with some of his classic pieces. As you can see in the images, the styling throughout the house couldn't be simpler.

On the terrace: chairs by the designer and a custom-made cedar dining table
White slip-covers in the living room, custom-made cupboards, and an antique Chinese wood stool
The porch has a view of Marigot Bay, with Pointe Milou beyond
A magnificent gaïac tree on the terrace. All the outdoors furniture are by Liaigre as well
In the master bedroom: an 18th-century chinoiserie French desk, minimalist platform beds topped by
mosquito nets, and luxury French linens by D. Porthault

In the master bathroom: Custom-made mirrors and teak shutters. The shelves and steel-frame mirrors were by local craftsmen
Beautiful. St. Barths is amazing.
